Unique approach to learning engages youth.

Why Gemstone

We are Project Gemstone, a teen-led initiative with gifted young leaders that provides enriching learning experiences for children in grades 4-7. Our bedrock inspirations are crystal, a natural resource, and gemstone, a polished crystal. Our students are naturally bright. They thrive as we polish their academic abilities with engaging and creative resources.

We instill confidence in our young scholars by showing them they are rare Gems. Our beliefs in our students drive our pedagogy. We have created learning environments that promote curiosity and success. We partner with homeschool co-ops, churches, and organizations nationwide and provide hands-on math lessons and critical thinking activities that attract a diverse network of learners.

Our
Purpose

Our Vision

At Project Gemstone, we defy social stigmas with an educational model that includes quality leadership and high expectations for all students despite their unequal circumstances or access to quality resources. When coupled with young mentors who look like them, we know that children rest more confident and assured and become more willing to engage in diverse learning processes. Our proprietary learning system includes representation of black youth that aspire to build diverse connections.

Who's in
charge?

Nigel (age 15) and Shane Mushambi (age 17) oversee Project Gemstone. These young entrepreneurs, philanthropists, motivational speakers, and award-winning authors have paved the way for others to also achieve. They are the Project Gemstone prototype. They believe that, with the right guidance, every child can become astute changemakers and gifted students.

Here's a few of their accomplishments:

·       They held their first benefit drive when they were just four and five years old. They raised money to purchase toys for a hospital in Mansfield, Texas.

·       In 2018, they purchased meals for over 200 homeless individuals with proceeds from their baking business, 2 Brothers in the Kitchen.

·       In 2019, they became educational ambassadors for JB Dondola, Inc., an organization that provides clean water, sanitation, and hygiene programs (WASH) to underserved and impoverished communities in Africa and the United States.

·       In 2020, they launched Project Gemstone on a small scale.

·       In 2022, they expanded the Project to include homeschool co-ops and other organizations.

Our Impact

"I am more confident about speaking up. I learned I don't have to be 100% sure of the answer, but I have to try and be engaged."

I wish all my teachers were as funny as Nigel. Laughing and learning at the same time is a good combination.

"The next time I see a challenging question, I am going do it bit by bit using the skills I learned today."

I liked learning the short cuts they taught. I don’t consider myself strong in math but learning their shortcuts made me feel more confident

I didn’t realize that math had so many tricks to it. Their class helped me see math in a new way.
